DDR5 Inductor Solution-Low Loss, Achieving High Performance and Reliability.

2024.4.10 Product Notices GOTREND Technology Co.,Ltd

As technology continues to evolve, each generation of memory sees upgrades in terms of speed, technology, and power consumption. In the latest DDR5 memory standard, besides improvements in speed and technology, reducing voltage and power consumption has become one of the focal points.
Compared to DDR4, the core standard operating voltage of DDR5 memory has been lowered from 1.2V to 1.1V, with an allowable fluctuation range of within 3% (i.e., ±0.033V).

To drive higher frequencies and lower power consumption standards for memory, DDR5 introduces significant improvements by relocating the memory voltage regulation module from the motherboard to the memory PCB, forming an independent voltage stabilizer module known as PMIC.

This innovative design establishes a motherboard input voltage standard of 12V / 5V for memory, which is then converted to 1.1V by the PMIC module. This design not only enhances monitoring capabilities for power and temperature of the memory chips but also improves conversion efficiency and voltage control precision.

Furthermore, there has been a significant change in the power delivery architecture of DDR5, shifting from the previous multi-phase, high-current centralized supply to a dual-phase, comparatively lower-current distributed supply. This architectural shift profoundly impacts the form factor of inductors, transitioning them from large-sized, high-current assembly types to small-sized, thin-profile ones, with very minimal loss requirements.

In response to the power management requirements of DDR5, JEDEC has set higher efficiency standards. Different application scenarios, such as RDIMM / LRDIMM for server-side and UDIMM / SODIMM for client-side, have varying PMIC specifications, with the highest voltage conversion efficiency requirement exceeding 90%.

To meet the demand for DDR5 inductors from end customers, GOTREND introduces a new low-loss series, pairing the GSTL-SERIES with the GSTD-SERIES scheme, achieving high performance, reliability, and lower costs, providing robust support for DDR5.
