GOTREND offers a wide variety of inductors, which can be categorized into shielded and unshielded types based on their structural appearance. So, what are the differences between shielded and unshielded? Let's explore the distinctions between the two.



 

1、Differences in External Encapsulation :


A shielded inductor is covered with magnetic material, but not all inductors with external coverings are shielded inductors. For example, the GTW series inductors are also covered externally, but their outer casing is plastic, which cannot shield the magnetic field lines when the coil is energized ; thus, they are not considered shielded inductors.

Generally, non-shielded inductors have enamel-coated wire exposed on the outside without a magnetic shielding cover. Some may use a sleeve (PET or UL) to protect the wire coil. To distinguish between shielded and non-shielded inductors from the outside, it is important to identify whether the covering material is magnetic.




 

2、Differences in Magnetic Circuit Structure :


Shielded inductors have a closed magnetic circuit, meaning the entire closed magnetic path is made of magnetic material. This structure protects the wires, circuits, and coils from external magnetic fields and reduces the electromagnetic interference generated by the circuit affecting other components. Shielded inductors have very low magnetic reluctance, with toroidal cores being a representative type of closed magnetic circuit structure.

Non-shielded inductors have an open magnetic circuit, where the magnetic path is not enclosed, resulting in an open state of the magnetic field lines. This open magnetic field in the circuit can cause electromagnetic interference or energy loss. Non-shielded inductors typically have higher DCR (DC resistance) compared to closed magnetic circuit inductors when producing the same inductance with the same volume and number of coil turns. Representative core types for open magnetic circuits include U-shaped and DR-shaped cores.
